2007/2008 AWARDS
LUTSF has pleasure in announcing 16 travel scholarships for 2007/08. The funded projects highlight the policy of the Fund to support a diverse range of journeys and to assist individuals at different stages in their careers to travel to enrich their practice and pursue a personal passion.
Lisa Ullmann, in whose memory the Fund was established in 1986, was an inspiration to those who knew her or who came into contact with her work. A distinguished teacher, she travelled worldwide to teach others. It is in memory of her vivacity, passion and energy that the committee continues her work by selecting movement and dance practitioners to further or celebrate their own practice by making a journey.
This year, 2007, is the centenary of Lisa Ullmann’s birth. In January 2007, 53 applications were received and 16 scholarships have been awarded, making a grand total of over £160,000 and 351 scholarships since the launch of the Fund in 1986. LUTSF would like to thank the Laban Guild and Bedford Physical Education Old Students’ Association for their centenary donations.
LUTSF projects for 2007/08 include;
-
London to Senegal - an international programme led by Germaine Acogny for choreographers and practitioners working with African dance forms.
-
Leeds to New Zealand - work with Touch Compass, a leading integrated dance company, to gain experience of working with disabled and non-disabled dancers.
-
Nottingham to Brazil - to attend a four week intensive in Capoeira to explore ways of integrating this with Cuban Salsa dance.
-
London to Tokyo - an intensive course with Aikido mentor Minoru Inaba at the Meiji Shrine.
-
Oxford to Argentina - to study Tango in Buenos Aires and explore its potential for use in palliative care.
-
Brighton to Columbia – to work on a dance residency for children many of whom are land-mine victims.
The quality of applications continues to be high. Of particular note this year was the number of applications from mid-career artists seeking professional development and the diversity of dance styles being explored. A total of £8,006 has been awarded to 16 winners. Of the 16, 5 are under 30, 8 are between 31-50, 3 are over 50 with one being over 70. All awardees are female this year highlighting a need to promote the fund more strongly to male applicants. Geographical spread is satisfactory with 6 awardees coming from London, 2 from the north, 2 from the south and 6 from the midlands.
LUTSF gratefully acknowledges the support of Gillian Lynne, CBE and the late Annie Collins as well as many individual donors. The Management Committee of the Fund would like to congratulate scholarship winners, and is delighted that LUTSF is able to help make so many exciting projects possible.
