2006/2007 AWARDS
LUTSF has pleasure in announcing the 21 recipients of awards for 2006/07. Scholarships are awarded to pay travel expenses. The projects being undertaken highlight the policy of the Fund to support a diverse range of topics and to assist individuals at different stages in their careers.
Lisa Ullmann, in whose memory the Fund was established in 1986, was an inspiration to those who knew her or who came into contact with her work. A distinguished teacher, she travelled worldwide to teach others. It is in memory of her vivacity, passion and energy that the committee continues her work by selecting movement and dance practitioners to further or celebrate their own practice by making a journey. Since 1987 LUTSF has awarded 335 scholarships totalling in excess of £150,000 in Lisa Ullmann’s name. Projects to be undertaken in 2006/2007 are exciting in their variety. Scholarship winners will travel
- to carry out research for choreographic work;
- to develop experience and performance skills in different aspects of dance/movement, for example: Peruvian tap dance; to attend an aerial dance festival; to attend a five-week intensive residency; to pursue an intensive course in somatics; to study at the Middendorf Breath Institute;
- to take part in a solo commissioning project; to be artist-in-residence exploring relationships between voice and movement
- to attend and contribute to an international conference; to attend a ritual dance seminar and tour; to participate in an Oriental dance festival ;
- to complete a training qualification in Gyrotonics; to attend a teacher training course in tribal style belly dance;
- to follow intensive study programme in, for example, Budo, to study the Asanti tribe’s Ghanaian dance; to study the European-derived quadrille dance form within the Afro-Caribbean Limonese community;
- to accept an invitation to work as choreographic assistant in a project with socially disadvantaged young people;
The quality of applications continues to be high. Of particular note this year was the number of applications from mature dancers seeking professional development and “refreshment”. A total of £9,079 has been awarded to 21 winners. Of the 21, 7 are under 30, 10 are between 31-50, 4 are over 50 with one being over 70. There are 17 female and 4 male recipients, approximately the same male/female ratio as last year. Geographical spread is satisfactory with 9 awardees coming from London, 2 from the north, 4 from the west, 4 from the south, 1 from the midlands and 1 from Wales. The projects take awardees into contact with leading dance practitioners worldwide and many will study innovative or unusual dance/movement forms.
The LUTSF gratefully acknowledges the support of the Linbury Trust, Gillian Lynne, CBE, Geraldine Stephenson, the late Annie Collins, as well as many individual donors. The Management Committee of the fund would like to congratulate scholarship winners, and is delighted that LUTSF is able to help make possible so many exciting projects.
Donations (one-off gifts, covenants, or bequests) are sought to make it possible for LUTSF to continue its work in funding travel costs for individuals undertaking a project in dance/movement.
