2004/2005 AWARDS

The Lisa Ullmann Travelling Scholarship Fund (LUTSF), established in 1986 in memory of the distinguished international teacher of movement and dance, has great pleasure in announcing the recipients of awards for 2004/5. The twenty-one Scholarships awarded this year will enable movement and dance practitioners to travel abroad and in the UK to undertake research projects, attend and lead workshops, present choreography and performance projects, and attend conferences and arts festivals. Included this year are two special awards in memory of Ellinor Hinks, one of the founders of LUTSF and treasurer for many years, who died in January 2004.

Again this year it is remarkable how many dance forms are represented among the projects being undertaken by Scholarship winners. Three awardees are travelling to study African dance, both indigenous and theatre forms. South America has proved a popular destination, the number going there this year matches the number travelling to North America, which is always very popular. The Selection Committee was impressed by the amount of background work applicants outlined in their applications, showing clear understanding of the need for contacts to have been set up prior to making an application for funding.

The Special Award made in memory of Ellinor Hinks is for two people to go together to visit centres set up by British Charities to offer workshops on providing opportunities to dance for those with various handicapping conditions, and in particular to work with children.

LUTSF received 50 applications this year and, once again, the quality of applications was high. Of the 21 recipients, 8 are under 30 years of age, 12 are 31-49, and 1 is over 50. There are 17 female and 4 male awardees. Although there are fewer male awardees this year all are very strong candidates. Geographical spread is wider than in some previous years with only 9 winners coming from London and its environs, 12 coming from other parts of the UK including Scotland and Wales. We are especially pleased that the Fund may have an effect on dance around the regions as a result of awards to practitioners in Hull, Crediton, Penzance, Bath and Gloucester.

The LUTSF gratefully acknowledges the support of the Linbury Trust, Gillian Lynne, Geraldine Stephenson, the late Annie Collins and the late Ellinor Hinks, as well as many individual donors. The Management Committee of LUTSF would like to congratulate Scholarship Winners and is delighted that LUTSF is able to help make possible some exciting projects.
