The object of the Charity, as laid down in the constitution, is to provide assistance to students and practitioners of movement and dance for travel expenses (by rail, coach, sea and air) within the United Kingdom and abroad, in order to attend conferences, courses of study, or pursue a research project in the field of movement, dance or studies related to these fields.
The charity aims to attract suitable applications from all parts of the country in the most efficient way possible, to select the most deserving applicants using knowledge and experience of all committee members, to administer the distribution of money to scholarship winners efficiently making sure that proof of travel and a report is received from each one, to raise funds by attracting donations and to manage efficiently the money held by the charity.
Administration is in the hands of a management committee with specific tasks such as publicity, selection, and finance and fund-raising delegated to sub-committees. The Secretary has the task of receiving requests for, and sending out, application forms as well as receiving completed ones. Since we have put application forms onto our website many applicants obtain their forms from there. Applicants are asked to submit four copies of their forms and these are distributed to management committee members, with each member receiving approximately one third of the forms to comment upon. These comments are taken to the selection sub-committee where the final decision is made. Reports from scholarship winners are sent to the Chairman who acknowledges them and transfers them to the publicity committee chair who prepares them for publishing on the charity’s web site.
All the work connected with the Charity is carried out by unpaid volunteers working from their homes and using their own equipment. Meetings are held in London in public areas or in officers’ homes or places of work. Most committee members do not claim travel expenses and so the main administrative costs are for postage, printing and stationery.
The Management Committee
Meetings took place on the following dates:
September 12th 2008
February 27th 2009

Two new committee members, Anna Carlisle and Shelly Saint-Smith were welcomed at the beginning of the year. At the end of the year B J Lewis resigned as chair and Anna Carlisle was elected chair. The handover is to be phased over the next year.

The calibre of the 47 applicants was high this year and selection continues to be competitive. There were applications from a wide range of age groups, with a majority of younger dancers. Male dancers made up 13 % of applications. Dance styles represented in the successful applications include Butoh, Baratha Natyam, Klein technique and street styles.
LUTSF projects for 2009/10 include; (full list available on the website);
- Edinburgh to Lisbon to explore the collaborative relationship between choreographer and composer
- Manchester to Chennai to attend a music and dance festival and the Natya Kala conference
- Banbury to San Francisco to work with leading experts in contortionism and burlesque
- Bristol to Ghana to learn traditional dances and to build on a link with artists there.
- London to Hamberg and Antwerp to take part in the European professional development programme 'Dance Beyond Borders'.
- Plymouth to Perth to attend the International Performance conference 'Boom or Bust' and Bodyweather site-based workshops.
A total of £9,622 has been awarded to 20 winners. Of the 20, 11 are under 30 and 9 are between 31 and 50. 3 awardees are male and 17 female marking a slight drop in male awardees this year. Geographical spread is good with 6 awardees coming from London, 3 from the north, 5 from the south, 4 from the west, 1 from the midlands and 1 from Scotland.
The Vivien Gear award has been given to Harriet Macaulay travelling to the USA to attend the Jacob’s Pillow Festival. The Annie Collins award goes to Nicola Northover and Kate McMonagle to attend the New York Tap Festival and Humphrey-Weidman and Limon technique and repertory workshops respectively. Gillian Lynne awards go to Antonia Guedes, Victoria Igbokwe, Harriet Macauley and Errol White.
LUTSF gratefully acknowledges the support of Gillian Lynne, CBE, the late Annie Collins and the late Vivien Gear as well as many individual donors. The Management Committee of the Fund would like to congratulate scholarship winners, and is delighted that LUTSF is able to help make so many exciting projects possible.
Administration of awards
Tickets for scholarship winners continue to be purchased through a company called Keytravel which deals solely with charities.
Selection Procedure
No significant changes have been made to the underlying criteria for selection or the selection process.
Publicity
The Web site continues to be the main plank of LUTSF publicity providing access to information about the fund, lists and analyses of scholarships as well as advice to applicants and the application form. Reports written by scholarship winners are available on the website for donors, potential donors and anyone who might wish to apply for a scholarship.
The two annual press releases were sent by email this year.
The greater ease of communication via email had meant that, once again, scholarship winners can be contacted when they arrive back in this country and sent reminders when their reports are overdue. As a result most reports have arrived on time.
Individual Journeys in Movement and Dance, our celebratory publication, was designed, compiled and printed. The colour and size is the same as an earlier publication celebrating the first ten years, and the content is composed mainly of illustrated extracts from scholarship winners’ reports. It has been very well received.
Finances
This year we received a substantial bequest of over £74,000 from our late secretary, Vivien Gear.
As a result the budget for scholarship winners was increased. In view of the volatility of the travel market it was proposed that we should earmark a reserve to cover discrepancies between the scholarship awarded and the cost of travel.
The accounts for the year ended 31 March 2009 show that expenditure was within budget, At the end of the financial year the Fund balances were £92,517.
Further work was done on preparations to launch the ‘Friends scheme’.
As in previous years committee members have borne much of the administrative cost themselves.
